Volunteer

If you're 16 or older and are interested in serving the community of West Windsor as a member of our squad, you're in the right place. Most of our members joined without any prior medical training and have since received hundreds of hours of training and responded to many emergencies. The responsibilities of a member include riding one night-time duty shift per week (7 p.m. to 7 a.m.), attending monthly meetings, attending monthly drills, and participating in other events as needed. Members sleep in the bunk-room at the squad building during each duty shift. Please apply 2-3 months in advance of when you intend to take an EMT course.  Courses start in January, June, and September. Email membership "at" twinw "dot" org if you need more information.
Further information for prospective members

Twin “W” First Aid Squad is a volunteer organization that provides 9-1-1 emergency medical services for the town of West Windsor.  In the evenings, a volunteer crew is stationed in the squad building, ready to respond to everything from medical emergencies to motor vehicle collisions.  On an average night, they respond to 1 or 2 calls.  During the daytime, squad members supplement the career staff of West Windsor Emergency Services as needed.

Our members provide their service as EMT’s, and as a new member, you would be expected to obtain EMT certification if you do not have it now.  EMT courses generally meet in the evenings a couple days a week and last throughout the spring or fall.  In the summer, there are also condensed classes that meet during the day.  Registration for classes fills up quickly, and you must become a member before you register so that the squad can pay for the course.  The membership application process takes up to 6 weeks, and class registration can fill up 4 weeks before the start date, so you must apply far in advance of when you anticipate taking the course.

Midway through the course, you may begin taking duty shifts as an Observer.  Once you obtain EMT certification (or if you have it already), you are expected to commit to at least one overnight shift per a week.  On your duty nights, there will be at least two experienced EMT’s, who will guide your development as a patient care provider.  As you gain experience, you will be given more responsibility on calls.  Depending on your comfort level and your ability to demonstrate skills and knowledge to the crew chief, you will be promoted to Provider status in six months to a year.
